Kirk's Cottage

An addition and renovation to the pioneering Northwest Modern architect Paul Kirk’s 1947 residence. The addition continues the use of angled built-in millwork and glazed walls to seamlessly blend the new and original structures.

Inspiration

The owner envisioned a home inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie style, leading to a unique design featuring three pavilions linked by an elongated hallway, embodying the harmony and horizontal lines characteristic of the style.

Design

The design of this home contrasts heavy, grounded masonry walls in stone and plaster with light, elongated cantilevered roofs, creating a visually striking and sculptural effect using minimal structural steel.

A Porte Cochere enhances the entry experience, employing a compression and release effect that amplifies the sense of height and space in the adjoining Great Room.

Meanwhile, the cadence of the window design in the connecting hallway draws attention to a strategically placed art niche, further adding to the home's unique architectural character.

Permitting

The architectural design embraced the site's constraints, innovatively maximizing the impervious area and the building envelope to capture and optimize the southwestern solar exposure.  

Through careful selection and sizing the project elements along with a strategic partnership with the civil engineer, the project maintained design and integrity while ensuring full compliance with the storm water and other building codes.

Build

With the budget in a comfortable position during construction, the homeowners elected to implement enhancements.  

They chose to upgrade to a flush finish on the base and door jambs, enhancing the design with a contemporary take on the classic prairie style of Frank Lloyd Wright.
